Open Labware course in Addis Ababa has kicked off!

We are excited to announce that we have successfully completed day 1 of our VolkswagenStiftung-sponsored two-week course on “Building your own Lab equipment” at the Department of Physiology and Anatomy, University of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. All 23 participants from 7 countries have arrived safely (South Africa, Namibia, Cameroon, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Ethiopia), as have our energetic faculty from Germany, UK and USA.

Week 1 is all about building 7 RepRap-type 3D printers from their off-the-shelf components – see below for some impressions! We hope to have them running by Wednesday… We will then start 3D designing lab equipent using OpenSource software as well as explore online databases for existing models. Week 2 will then be all about microcontrollers and simple electronics, to put some “soul” into our designs!
