On Novemeber 18th, TReND attended the Planet Earth Institute‘s #ScienceAfrica Unconference at the Impact Hub Westminster. The event began with panel debates and workshops about issues around education, science and policy in Africa, as well as how part of the Planet Earth Institute’s network can build a broad coalition of those passionate about science in Africa.
In the afternoon, the event hosted the Planet Earth Institute’s first Africa Data Challenge. From more than 200 applications, TReND was one of the five shortlisted finalists to pitch for project seed funding of up to £7,000 for their ideas related to the emerging data revolution. Our proposal, was for a 1-week “Bioinformatics approaches to Genomics” workshop at Bingham University, (Karu, Nigeria) to be run in 2015.
Following the five pitches, the judging panel and the Planet Earth Institute trustees generously awarded both TReND and the AWP network the winning award, such that both winners were granted the full sum each for their projects.
Applications for this course will be opened in April 2015. If you’d like to keep up-to-date with TReND events, please subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on Facebook.
