Volunteering at African Universities

Dreaming of Africa? Fancy an academic experience in an interesting new environment? Volunteer at an African University as part of their academic staff!

Many African universities are keen to host highly trained scientists from developed countries even for short stays to help move their existing academic and research programmes forward. Over the years we have developed personal contacts with senior lecturers, researchers and other key personnel at Universities all over Africa (see below). These are all highly trained, motivated and reliable local university officials that have been carefully selected by us to act as your host. Upon application they are able to arrange individually tailored short- or mid-term contracts for you at their respective institution. Remuneration will typically include free accommodation and a basic allowance (generally if you stay for three months or longer). You should come out at least cash neutral, and usually there will be some money left over to explore the country on the weekends.

Of course, any arrangements set-up through this scheme will be highly tailored to the individual situation. If you’re interested in the program, please fill out our volunteer application form. You can read more on what each University needs and offers below. And please help us spread the word of this fantastic new opportunity by sharing it with your friends and colleagues!

We have partnered with a number of universities (in Uganda, Nigeria and Ethiopia) that are extremely keen to expand their research expertise by hosting visiting academics. So, if you have a bit of time after your PhD, a few months between postdoc contracts, or fancy an interesting sabbatical, this programme is for you!

FAQs

Is it safe? – Yes, we will only send you to places that are globally considered stable regions of the continent. Indeed, the vast majority of the African continent has been stable for many decades or more by today, and many areas are widely considered rapidly developing economies with vast potential for growth.

Not a neuroscientist? – No problem at all! Experts in ALL areas of higher education are needed. Yes, this does include social sciences. For non-biological sciences please fill out this form and we will see where we have contacts to best suit your abilities!

I have a partner, can I bring him/her? – Bringing a partner will usually not be a problem – perhaps they are trained in a different discipline? It will usually be quite easy to find something worthwhile for them to do as well.

I have no money at all right now, what will I have to pay for? – In most cases you will have to pay for your plane ticket (usually ~1000 USD from most places). On-site accommodation will be provided free of charge. In addition you will receive an allowance to be negotiated depending on your qualifications, the amount of time you wish to stay and the local cost of living (this may not apply if you are wishing to stay for less than three months).
